This is a brochure about an ILO project in Asia, called Managing Cross-border Movement of Labour in Southeast Asia. The project aims to protect migrant workers by developing a knowledge base on migration issues for policy makers and building up the capacity of governments to manage orderly labour migration. It advocates for sound national labour migration policies, assists with raising migrant workers’ awareness of their rights, helps them access legal systems, promotes low-cost, efficient remittance systems, and supports skills training and enterprise development.

CARAM - 2010. "The report is released in tandem with the objectives of the International day to recognize the contributions made by the migrants to the workforce of the host country and to the country of origin. On this day of recognisation, CARAM Asia aimed to highlight the fundamental issue of remittances and the myth of the improvements over their lives.
Our findings shows that the much applauded remittance-led development in the Asia region over the last decade is built on the backs of migrant workers and their families while they continue to experience severe and ongoing labour and human rights violations at all levels of the migration process. The report will demonstrate the myth of long term benefits from remittances for their families and communities of the migrant person.

"The wise management of international migration is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and the Commonwealth has unparalled experience to share. [...] This report, prepared under our direction by Dr. Alan Gamlen of the International Migration Institute, University of Oxford [...] covers four of our ten terms of reference, including human dimensions, brain drain, the role of diasporas, and remittance flows. This [report] covers a broad sweep. It makes a series of recommendations, which we commend to policymakers, and advocates the establishment of a Commonwealth Consultative Process. The Commonwealth, with its use of English and some 45million people living outside their land of birth, is an important continuing arena for world migration."

During the first day of the Visioning Event the participants got an opportunity to get to know each other better, through a sociogramming exercise where they learned that that were more than 300 years of migration and anti-human trafficking experience in the group. The participants also gained a better understanding of what a community of practice is and the utility of it.

The Visioning Event for AP-MagNet took place in Chiang Mai on October 25-27, 2010 and it brought together 38 migration and anti-human trafficking experts and practitioners from ILO's tripartite constituents from seven countries, experts, UN agencies, International Organizations, NGOs and ILO staff working on migration and anti-human trafficking. The overall objectives of the event was to introduce the concept of communities of practice, to share experience from the ILO in regards to the existing communities in the region, to identify challenges and responses to migration and to do a joint work planning to determine the niche, identify products, services and topics for discussion for AP-MagNet and to develop a draft list of activities on three levels, short, medium and long term.

Working Paper No. 63 - University of Sussex. "Abstract - This paper explores an alternative way of understanding the effects of the present economic crisis on migration. The first section sets out a conceptual framework that emphasises the importance of processes which are not related to the business cycle. In particular, it is argued that economic restructuring and shifts in the underlying geography of wealth and power might be playing a far greater role than is currently allowed for in the literature. The middle section of the paper adopts a critical perspective on the nature of the crisis, arguing the importance of rent-seeking behaviours, and of a correct understanding of labour productivity. The final section addresses the effects of the economic crisis on migrations in the East Asia Region. It attempts to put into practice the conceptual framework outlined in the first section."

CMA - 2010. "The report is CMA's initial project to better understand and closely examine processes, approaches and contents of BLAs and SSAs and their potential as effective mechanisms to enhance protection of the rights of Filipino migrant workers. We would like to share the report's observations, analyses and recommendations to our government negotiators and policy makers, the OFWs and fellow advocates in the hopes that we can all be active stakeholders in initiating, developing, and negotiating human rights-based, gender-sensitive BLAs and SSAs. MPI - 2010. "This report, done by the Migration Policy Institute under a USAID grant, examines how diasporas are in a unique position to have a positive effect on the economy of their countries of origin - the key is for those countries to seize the opportunities. This report documents how diaspora entrepreneurs often are motivated to contribute to job creation and economic growth in their native lands. But, many developing countries have met only limited success in attracting diaspora investors and entrepreneurs."
