Peoples' Global Action on Migration, Development and Human Rights 2009: The Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Migrants

— theme: Rights and protection of migrants, Migration and development
— country: Global
— type: Reports

This report attempts to describe the synergy of the 5 days of the Peoples' Global Action and presents the events and discussion points raised during this parallel event to the 3rd GFMD in Athens, Greece. It shows how civil society engagement with the discourse on migration and development since the UN HLD in 2006 has grown with the strengthening of existing and new alliances. The workshop accounts in particular detail experiences and hopes and give recommendations. The diversity of the workshops shows the intersectionality of migration with other issues. The report also discusses the Future of the Forum (GFMD) and how civil society can better widen the space for discourse beyond the development benefits of migration and find the collective voice that would speak to the governments in the GFMD.
