IOM drafting framework for migrant workers

Visiting Director General of International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Ambassador William Lacy Swing on Monday said that his organisation was formulating a framework for migration management to handle the migrant workers’ safety during any crisis across the world.

He made the statement when he met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban.

Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Bijan Lal Dev briefed the reporters after the meeting.

The IOM DG said that the aim of the framework would be ensuring safe return of migrant workers to their own countries during any major crisis.

He also appreciated Bangladesh’s move to send migrant workers through government channels.

“We are closely observing the progress of this process and we are thinking to replicate this model in other countries too,” he said.

The IOM DG also said that migrant workers should no way be considered commodity.

During the call on, the Prime Minister highly appreciated the DG and his organisation for contribution towards safe return of the Bangladeshi workers from Libya in 2011.

Hasina said that her government took various steps including financial assistance for migrant workers from the Prabashi Kallyan Bank (Expatriate Welfare Bank) while they go abroad.

She mentioned that the migrant workers were being given priority for jobs in foreign countries including Libya after the situation has improved there.

Labour and Employment Minister Mosharraf Hossian, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Gowher Rizvi, State Minister for Labour Munnujan Sufian, Ambassador at Large M Ziauddin, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap were also present during the meeting.
