Govt to take care of migrant workers’ health to prepare for AEC

28 February 2013 - National News Bureau of Thailand. The Public Health Ministry has announced that it is from now on taking care of migrant workers’ health, with an emphasis on contagious disease control in preparation for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

The Public Health Ministry has announced that it is from now on taking care of migrant workers’ health, with an emphasis on contagious disease control in preparation for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

Adviser to Public Health Minister Pasit Sakdanarong stated that he has reiterated to public health personnel to provide health service and welfare to both legal and illegal migrant workers, especially those working on fishing boats.

The Ministry will provide those workers with health care, health promotions, and service to prevent them from contagious diseases such as cholera, diphtheria, and dengue fever. Foreign workers who are diagnosed with tuberculosis, leprosy, elephantiasis, syphilis, drug addiction, alcoholism, mental disorder, and mentally retarded will not be permitted to work or stay in the kingdom.

The Public Health believed that the move would help control the spread of the diseases, which will in turn reduce medical expenses for migrant workers.
