Govt repatriates 481 illegal migrant workers

Jakarta Post - 20 January 2015 - The Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) has flown home 481 Indonesian workers who had were stranded in Saudi Arabia because of their illegal status.

Among the emigrants who arrived on Monday at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten were two 12-year-olds.

BNP2TKI head Nusron Wahid said these were the first of a long list of illegal workers who were in the process of being helped to return to Indonesia from various countries. He added that the government was currently still lobbying Saudi Arabia and other countries to provide better contracts for Indonesian workers.

“We are trying to make a new contract with Saudi Arabia that provides better salaries and protection for workers. We also don’t mind if the workers want to return home. We are ready to assist them,” said Nusron as quoted by detik.com on Monday.
