Free hotel quarantine for Sri Lanka’s returning migrant workers put on hold

Economy Next, Sri Lanka, 8 July 2021 - A day after Sri Lanka’s labour minister told parliament that returning migrant workers are provided free hotel quarantine facilities, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said it has put it on hold as most workers have already been repatriated.

SLBFE Deputy General Manager Mangala Randeniya told EconomyNext Thursday (08) that, however, workers who have yet to return can opt for government quarantine facilities which will also be free of charge.

“What’s happening at the moment is that the quarantine centres that were managed by the SLBFE or were paid for by the SLBFE are no longer in operation since government quarantine facilities are now available for returnees,” he said.

“Returning migrant workers who are unable to afford hotel quarantine may now request government facilities,” he added.

Labour Minister De Silva told parliament Wednesday (07) told parliament that migrant workers who return to island are provided quarantine faculties free of charge in 14 hotels across the country selected by the SLBFE.

Randeniya maintained that the minister’s statement still holds true.
