New Age, Bangladesh, 2 April 2022 - THIS is a matter of grave concern that the airlines that operate in Bangladesh have continued to charge abnormally high airfare from Middle East-bound migrant workers, adding to the cost of migration yet again. There seem to be a number of reasons at play behind the unusually high ticket prices. Aviation experts say that the price of tickets is set based on supply and demand. The availability of tickets is disproportionate to the high demand in Bangladesh as about 7,000 migrant workers travel to the Middle East on an average every day. Experts also say that airlines have increased airfare to deal with the substantial financial loss they incurred during the protracted Covid outbreak. An increase in the cost of migration as a result of high ticket prices has hit the migrant labour sector hard and has come to discourage many migrant workers from travelling abroad. This could impact the remittances flow and adversely affect the national economy. What is, however, worrying is that the situation has come to such a pass because of the failure of the government to take early measures to keep ticket prices stable and ease the burden on migrant workers.
