Three Myanmar workers die in Malaysia

Myanmar Times, Malaysia, 20 May 2019 - Three suspected illegal migrant workers died and seven others were injured in a road accident in Malaysia on Sunday, according to a Myanmar charity group in Kuala Lumpur.

A vehicle was carrying 14 ethnic Chin migrants when the accident occurred early Sunday, the Kathone Free Funeral Service said.

“Seven people suffered serious injuries. We had to send them to two hospitals. Four people have been detained and interrogated by police,” U San Win, the group’s chair said.

The vehicle loaded with 14 people crashed into roadside barriers as it was passing over a bridge near Simpang Empat in Gunung Semanggol town, according to the Star Online news portal.

The fatalities and the injured people fell off the bridge, the report said.

“Three people died when they fell off the bridge. The driver fled the scene of the accident,” U San Win said.

Myanmar Embassy officials and the charity are providing assistance to the injured and the relatives of the people who died.

Some Myanmar workers travel to Malaysia illegally through southern Thailand. Up to 4000 Myanmar nationals go to Malaysia looking for work every month.
