Guidelines for employers of foreign domestic helpers launched

The Star, Malaysia, 25 May 2017 - A guidebook for employers of foreign domestic helpers was launched by Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem here on Thursday.

It addresses issues on recruitment, employment practices and communications.

Titled "Guidelines and Tips for Employers of Foreign Domestic Helpers", it also addresses questions on how to resolve conflict and provides adequate resources to support households employing foreign domestic helpers.

The guidelines were jointly prepared by the Human Resources Ministry and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

It was prepared after a series of consultations with employers of foreign domestic helpers and several associates.

Riot, in his opening speech, said the guidelines are divided into three main segments.

He said it contains four annexes which consist of a sample of an employment contract, key contact details and other resources of laws governing the hiring of foreign maids.

"The publication of this guidebook marks an important milestone to both the Ministry and ILO for being able to produce a document such as this to assist employers of foreign domestic helpers in addressing and handling the many situations and issues they may face upon engaging foreign domestic helpers.

"The publication also portrays the seriousness of the Government and the Ministry especially in ensuring the welfare, rights and protection of foreign domestic helpers be given top priority as they too play an important role in contributing to the development of our country," he said.

The guidebook is published in both English and Bahasa Malaysia and is available on the ministry's and Department of Labour's websites.
